Hiwassee River Rainbow

Every year about this time people start asking, "How is the fishing going to be this year." Well, one thing is for certain - every year is different. But based on our winter and early spring weather summary, we are set up for one of the best seasons in east Tennessee and north Georgia. We had a good cold winter with rain and snow which provided us a stable supply of cold water for our mountain trout streams and a cold water reserve in our reservoirs. We have had an extremely wet March which has given us quick lake fill in the TVA reservoirs. So, we should have good stable and predictible flows for spring into summer. Combine all of that with the fact that our trout went through minimal stress last summer and fall and it all adds up to some good rod bending in 2011.

We are smack dab in the middle of a great summer fly fishing season in East Tennessee. The Hiwassee River has been a proven performer for us and will remain a steady producer as TVA increases flows for the next couple of months. The increased flow rate will make for even better drift boat fly fishing here. Dry fly afternoons are the norm.

Conditions are ideal now for drift boat trips on the Hiwassee river. We are currently floating the upper river through the gorge and national forest area daily. TVA began giving us adequate flows ahead of schedule this year. Flow rates are the best we have seen for some time. The quality zone is happening and fish are rising at the steps.

It is dry fly season on the river. The sulfurs are waning and the big Isonychias are beginning to pop. There are also few caddis, cahills and assorted other insects hatching. When the weather is right, the little BWO’s show themselves.

Water temps are the coldest ever. We are getting readings in the 50’s as far down as Reliance. Most afternoons are foggy and cool on the river , even in the summer warmth.

Spring season has been outstanding so far. Early summer will be great also. The bugs are out on all of our major waters now.

The Toccoa River is fishing well with sulfurs peaking now. Dry fly action with the big boys coming from large nymphs on the bottom.
The Hiwassee is holding the best trout population of several years. Sulfurs are starting. We are currently wade fishing here and will begin drift boat trips on the upper river on May 29th. We will have some weekdays before then. We are expecting great dry fly fishing at the stairsteps for June.
The tributaries in the Tellico basin are fishing well with a variety of bugs coming off. The brook trout in the headwaters of our favorite streams are fat and plentiful now.
We have great flows to drift the Clinch River now. A few sulfurs down low on calm days. Of all the streams in the southeast, the Clinch is currently holding the best population of large fish. They are not always easy to catch. Bring your A game. If you have never fished it, it is like fishing a large spring creek in a drift boat. Stealth and presentation are critical. Early mornings are best.

“It’s all good”. Our southern Appalachian streams and tailwaters are happening now. The bugs are on and the trout are rising.

Hiwassee River - Drift the lower or wade the upper. It doesn’t matter, fish are everywhere. Hendricksons, Blue Wings, Caddis and more.

Toccoa River – good flows came a little late this year, but we can drift it all now. Good hatches. Big nymphs for bigger fish.

Tellico River – Perfect levels for wading. Bows, Browns and Brookies. Quills, Little stoneflies, Caddis and it is time for Drakes.

We are barely into our early spring season and already things are starting out big. Our twenty-inch club has two new members, Jim and Richard with a brown and a rainbow trout from our local tailwaters. 2010 is going to be a great year on our east Tennessee rivers and mountain streams. The weather has been right and the adequate rains have our reservoirs in great shape for the season. We have good fish numbers and size with plenty of bugs for this year.
